Spectators expected for removal of bridge span

February 08, 2012

Workers are set to remove a 2-million pound section of the historic Memorial Bridge linking New Hampshire and Maine.

The removal had been scheduled for Tuesday night, but the prep work took longer than expected and workers wanted to start fresh.

Transportation officials say high tide at 11:39 a.m. on Wednesday would be the optimal time for the lift span to be positioned onto the barge that will float it to a scrap yard in Everett, Mass.

The Coast Guard has shut down river traffic on the Piscataqua River to facilitate the project.

Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez will be on hand to witness the removal and discuss the importance of infrastructure to the economy.

A new bridge is expected to open in July 2013.
