The office of the Massachusetts attorney general said it recovered nearly $5 million in restitution and penalties from employers who violated state labor laws last year.

The office’s Fair Labor Division recovered roughly $4.5 million in restitution for nearly 4,400 workers whose employers violated laws that cover such work-related issues as minimum wage, overtime pay, and tip pooling. The office added that it also assessed $500,000 in penalties against employers that violated such laws.

In a statement, Attorney General Martha Coakley said, “Companies must be held accountable to ensure that employees are paid the wages and receive the benefits that they have rightfully earned.”

Workers who believe that they may not have been paid the appropriate wages are encouraged to call the attorney general’s Fair Labor Hotline at 617-727-3465.
