A bar in New York City plans to ban sales of Samuel Adams beers during the Super Bowl.
Foley's NY Pub and Restaurant, which sits across the street from the Empire State Building, will prohibit the sales of anything produced by the Boston Beer Co. during the game, in a show of support for the Giants, according to CBS News and WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
The pub's owner, Shaun Clancy, told the Yankees' YES Network that he wants patrons to drink beers made by Brooklyn Brewery instead.
Samuel Adams founder Jim Koch is taking the snub in stride. "We are OK being taken off draft for a couple of hours if the hometown fans want to show their team spirit on Sunday," he said in an email this morning. "I know Foley's, and it's a great bar. I hope they remember that no matter where you're watching the game or who wins, if it weren't for the original New England patriot, Samuel Adams, and his cohorts, we might be watching cricket and drinking tea instead of watching the Super Bowl."
Boston's bars, too, are showing a little more class than New York's (or at least one of them) in support of the Patriots. Ducali Pizzeria & Bar, for instance, plans to have a battle of the beers during the game, by serving a lineup of beers from Massachusetts and New York.
It's all par for the course. We're not surprised that New York is putting on a display of poor sportmanship before it has even lost the game.
