French drug maker Sanofi SA, which last year bought Cambridge biotechnology company Genzyme Corp., said it was eliminating an unspecified number of overlapping jobs in Genzyme’s research and development operations.

While some of the lost jobs will be in Massachusetts, the parent company will be moving other research positions to the state from New Jersey as part of a restructuring it disclosed late last year, said Jack Coxcq, a spokesman at Sanofi’s US headquarters in Bridgewater, NJ. Sanofi also will be hiring other workers at Genzyme’s manufacturing sites in Massachusetts and its multiple sclerosis business, Cox said.

“Overall, our Massachusetts workforce will remain fairly stable,” he said, with about 5,000 employees.
