BRISTOL, N.H. - Audrey Pellegrino believes that good food can also be good for you, and she should know. “I’m a nutritionist,’’ she says, “and many of my clients have food allergies. I wanted a place for people to come and relax and have healthier foods.’’ The solution was Cornucopia, her storefront cafe in a downtown building that over the years had served as a restaurant, hotel, and brothel.

Now it features big display cases full of baked goods, along with comfortable couches and small tables for eating and chatting. Sandwiches run the gamut from a marinated portabella mushroom wrap with caramelized onion to a traditional grilled croque monsieur with ham, cheese, and béchamel sauce. Salads might feature curry chicken salad or turkey, smoked bacon, and fresh greens.

“Health is so related to food,’’ says Pellegrino, who also developed recipes for a tempting array of cakes, muffins, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and whoopie pies, many of which are gluten-free or vegan. Among the most popular are her carrot cake cupcakes and whoopie pies. “People are always asking for the recipe for my gluten-free carrot cupcakes,’’ she says. Much better, I think, to enjoy one in the warm and soothing cafe. On the way out, you can pick up some tea and spices from Blue Skies Natural Foods, which shares the storefront space.

Cornucopia 26 Central Square, 603-217-0005, www.thecornucopiabakery.com. Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat 8-3, Sun call for hours. Sandwiches and salads $3.95-$6.95.
