Constant Contact buys CardStar

Constant Contact, a Waltham company that provides online marketing services to small businesses, has acquired privately owned CardStar Inc., a loyalty platform that helps shoppers stay connected to their favorite merchants.

Boston-based CardStar develops mobile applications that extend the use of loyalty cards and mobile coupons. One example: A consumer digitizes a loyalty card, then shows the bar code on his or her iPhone screen at the checkout.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

In a statement, Constant Contact’s chief executive, Gail Goodman, said the CardStar platform “takes advantage of the anytime, anywhere nature of mobile - making it an excellent complement to our growing suite of engagement marketing tools for small businesses.

CardStar’s employees will join the Constant Contact team, including chief executive and founder Andy Miller and chief technology officer and founder Danny Espinoza.
