January 16, 2012

State officials gathered in Hartford for Connecticut’s official ceremony honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday’s event at the state Capitol was one of several across the state commemorating King on the holiday established to remember the civil rights leader. Officials rang the state’s replica of the Liberty Bell, and the Beulah Heights Praise Choir of New Haven performed.

Across town at the Connecticut Convention Center, the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority held its 27th annual Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship breakfast Monday. Nearly 600 people attended the event.

The alumnae group awards scholarships every year to female African-American high school seniors.
