An early-morning episode ended badly Thursday for a man in a hotel lobby in downtown Boston, where he was arrested after allegedly threatening to harm police officers and trying to head-butt one of them, all while a little underdressed, authorities said.

Boston police said in a statement that the suspect, Saud Alsharif, 22, of Boston, wore a bathrobe that was untied during the incident, exposing himself at one point as officers approached him.

A working phone number for Alsharif could not be located late last night. A call to a number listed for a relative in Cambridge was not immediately returned.

Officers responded to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on 776 Boylston St. at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday, where a hotel employee told them that Alsharif had struck one of the workers, the statement said.

Police approached him as he sat on a couch in the lobby, noting that his eyes were glassy and he appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, according to the statement.

Police said that Alsharif asked the officers, “Do I have to beat you up as well?’’

That inquiry prompted the officers to place him in handcuffs, the statement said, at which time he allegedly tried to head-butt one of them.

Alsharif was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and being disorderly, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court.

Asked during the booking process if he had any medical issues that police should know about, Alsharif responded, “Just cocaine and plenty of it,’’ the statement said.

It was not known last night if he had a lawyer.
