Senate president seeks repeal of RI tour tax

January 13, 2012

Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed has introduced legislation that would repeal the new 7 percent sales tax on sightseeing tours.

Tourism is a key industry in her home district of Aquidneck Island.

The Newport Democrat promised last fall to repeal the tax, despite approving the measure as part of the $7.7 billion 2012 budget adopted by lawmakers over the summer.

The Providence Journal reports ( http://bit.ly/yH35vM) that Paiva Weed called for the repeal after the tourism industry strongly objected to the tax that took effect Oct. 1.

It represents about $1 million in projected state revenue and applies to certain scenic tours and transportation that are partly in Rhode Island.
