Laura Kender, stationed at right defense, voiced a few words softly to herself and smirked as her twin sister, Elizabeth, took the faceoff for the Chelmsford High girls’ hockey team on Saturday night.

After controlling the faceoff, Elizabeth kept her head down and dished the puck through her legs to her sister at the blue line for a shot. A top-shelf glove save by Lincoln Sudbury goalie Sarah Provost prompted a grin from each of the twins as they glided back to the bench.

The Kender girls know they have a special bond.

Laura, seven minutes her sister’s elder, believes their telepathy makes communicating second nature.

“I don’t even have to look up and my sister will be there,’’ said Elizabeth, a senior center.

“Last year, there was a game where she scored and I assisted, then the next goal I scored and she assisted.’’

A year ago, as part of her pregame routine, Laura would down eight M&M’s (this season, the twins simply jump rope).

The Lions finished 12-9-1, losing to Billerica, 8-6, in the first round of the state tournament.

In a 6-0 start this season, the twins have teamed up for 14 points. Elizabeth is tied with freshman Julianne Sheehan with a team-high 11 points.

“I set a goal for myself this season of contributing a point every game, and so far I’ve done it,’’ said Elizabeth, who considers her sister her best friend.

“We basically do everything together.’’

“I’ve never seen anything like it,’’ said Lenny Rowe, in his 11th year as head coach. “They speak together and they are always together. Their communication is incredible.’’

The sisters, who started playing youth hockey at age 10 at the Chelmsford Forum in North Billerica, have developed into such a force that Rowe calls them “the generals.’’

“Our little brother started playing when he was 3,’’ Laura said of Nicholas, now a freshman on the Chelmsford High varsity boys’ squad. “After we watched a bunch of his games, we kept asking our parents if we could play.’’

Identical in height and weight, the twins are focused on taking the Lions as far as they can in the state tournament as seniors.

“We did a lot of offseason work,’’ said Laura. “We played for the Middlesex Islanders and the Flames,’’ a Marlborough club team. “We also joined Best Fitness and we try to go at least five days a week,’’ added Elizabeth.

Rowe says this year’s squad is the most skilled that he has coached.

“Our chemistry is great and we run four lines, which is almost unheard of in girls’ high school hockey,’’ he said.

The lines have produced 36 goals and have allowed just seven in the opening six games.

“Whatever line scores the most points the night before, gets to start,’’ said Rowe.
