Palermo said people coming in to have their fortunes told are far more worried about their finances than about worldwide famine.
“It used to be, ‘Will I get a new job,’ and now it’s, ‘Will I keep my job,’ ’’ Palermo told us yesterday. “People are so sick of living in the depression era.’’
So? Will they keep their job? It pains us to tell you, but the fraternity of fortune tellers isn’t that upbeat about the prospects for an economic recovery. They say the 99 percent should expect more pain and suffering in the new year, at least initially.
“The banks will finally let loose some money in July, but more people are going to lose their homes until then,’’ said Tina, a tarot reader at Regina Russell’s Tea Room in Quincy.
“It’s going to be a challenge for everyone. It’s not going to be a robust economy,’’ said psychic MaryLee Trettenero, owner of the Charlestown-based Boston Intuitive. “What everybody needs to know is that the world is different. We’re not going back to 2007.’’
Could all this bad news be good news for Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor running for president? In a word: No. While the soothsayers won’t rule out Romney getting the Republican nomination, they say he’s got the well-coiffed look of a loser.
“He’s not going to make it as far as people think,’’ said Trettenero. “I don’t think middle-income families identify with him.’’
“He’s the rich boy, and right now nobody’s feeling rich,’’ said Tina. “It’s not going to be Obama or Romney. . . . I see a good-looking man [becoming president], but I don’t know who that man is.’’
The clairvoyant crowd is split on Senator Scott Brown. Tina says the freshman Republican will get reelected in November, while Palermo is predicting victory for Democrat Elizabeth Warren.
“Scott Brown is like that band Quarterflash. Remember them?’’ Palermo said, referring to the early ’80s act that brought you “Harden My Heart.’’ “Quarterflash were a one-hit wonder, and Scott Brown is a one-term wonder.’’
Their forecasts for the state’s first casinos are likewise cloudy. While we were on the phone yesterday, Trettenero paused to consult her “spirit guides’’ about gaming, and she said they were none too happy.
“They’re not wild about it,’’ she said. “Casinos don’t influence people toward self-restraint.’’
“It’ll be a boon for business,’’ insisted Tina, whose guides apparently play a little poker. “Everyone who’s against it will be getting jobs there.’’
Finally, and most importantly, we asked if Tom Brady and the Patriots will win their fourth Super Bowl? On that, the telepathists were in agreement.
“This is Brady’s year to shine,’’ said Palermo. “These are his glory days - or his glory days part 2.’’
“And he’s going to have a third child,’’ said Tina. “And she’s as cute as the day is long.’’
