Senior defenseman Tommy Cross had a goal and an assist, but No. 3 Boston College couldn’t recover from an early deficit, falling to Michigan, 4-2, in the first round of the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit.

The Eagles fell to 12-7-0, while the Wolverines improved to 10-8-3.

Michigan took an early lead when David Wohlberg beat freshman Brian Billett on a two-on-one for his eighth goal of the season just 1:32 into the contest.

Sophomore Luke Moffatt doubled the lead on a two-man advantage at 16:50 and Michigan led, 2-0, after the opening stanza.

Cross cut the Wolverines’ lead in half on third goal of the year, beating Shawn Hunwick at 6:50 of the second period.

The Bruins draft pick then assisted on Paul Carey’s tying power-play goal at 11:42. It was Carey’s sixth of the season.

Michigan junior A.J. Treais broke the tie on an odd-man rush, scoring the eventual winner with 4:21 left in the second.

Luke Glendening added an empty-net score with 14.7 left to complete the scoring.

BC hit two pipes in the game. Junior Pat Mullane broke in on Hunwick and wrung a wrist shot off the left post in the first period and freshman Johnny Gaudreau flung a wrist shot past Hunwick and off the outside of the right post at 11:28 of the second.

The Wolverines outshot the Eagles, 29-25.

Hunwick, brother of former Bruin Matt Hunwick, recorded 23 saves to improve to 10-7-3.

Brian Billett had 25 saves, but fell to 3-2-0.
