November 26, 2011

President Barack Obama is honoring two Tufts University professors, one who mentors undergraduate students with disabilities and another who promotes the role of women in science and engineering.

Tufts is the only school to have two faculty members named as recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Physics professor Peggy Cebe is being honored for working with undergraduate students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including by running a summer internship program for the past nine years.

Electrical and computer engineering professor Karen Panetta founded the Nerd Girls program, which pushes to improve the perception of women engineers and scientists.

Cebe and Panetta will be honored at Dec. 11 through 13 at events in Washington, D.C., and receive $25,000 awards.
