A Rhode Island environmental news organization plans to collect Thanksgiving turkey carcasses to keep them out of the state’s main landfill.
EcoRI News says it will accept carcasses Saturday morning at the Pawtucket wintertime farmers market.
The waste will be given to a local farmer who intends to use the leftovers as feed for his pigs.
EcoRI News is a Providence-based nonprofit environmental news organization.
The organization says recycling turkey carcasses not only saves landfill space but returns nutrient-rich waste to the food cycle. The group has picked up nearly 10,000 pounds of food waste since it began collecting food scraps at local farmers markets last year.
