A lawsuit filed by Boston police officers could put many Massachusetts communities on the hook for millions of dollars in additional pay to police.
The officers sued the city for the full amount of additional pay they say they earned under the Quinn Bill, the law that rewards police with higher pay for earning college degrees.
The state stopped funding its half of the program in 2009 under budget constraints.
Boston continued funding its half of the extra pay, but says it is under no obligation to fund the state half.
