Forbidden City chamber musicians play Havana

Musicians from Beijing’s historic imperial palace are playing two performances in Havana this week as part of a cultural exchange.

The 10-member Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra will perform Chinese folkloric classics Thursday in the National Fine Arts Museum and Friday in an Old Havana church.

The aim is to introduce Cubans to instruments seldom heard of on the island, such as the bamboo flute and Chinese violin. The visitors will also give lessons to young musicians.

Orchestra director Liu Shun says there has been little contact between Cuban and Chinese musicians in the past, but officials hope for more exchanges in the future.

Liu said Wednesday that, “Music has no borders; it’s an expression between all human beings.’’
