Nick McLaughlin honored again

St. John’s Prep senior Nick McLaughlin of New Castle, N.H., was named a second-team Rolex Junior All-American by American Junior Golf Association.

Last summer, he won the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior for the second time in three years. The Massachusetts Golf Association junior champion had two other Top 10 finishes on the AJGA Tour and is ranked 20th among golfers ages 13-19 (representing 24 states and eight foreign countries).

McLaughlin, who plays out of Wentworth By The Sea in Rye, N.H., and at Far Corner Golf Club in West Boxford, will be feted Nov. 20 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Former Rolex Junior All-Americans include the PGA’s Bill Haas, Phil Mickelson,Jim Furyk, WebbSimpson,Matt Kuchar, and Hunter Mahan, and the LPGA’s Paula Creamer, BrittanyLincicome, and Cristie Kerr.

Merrimack climbs in field hockey

Merrimack has clinched no worse than a share of its first Northeast-10 Conference field hockey title and the top seed in the upcoming conference tourney with a 2-1 win over defending Division 2 national champion UMass-Lowell.

Merrimack climbed to 15-1 overall (9-0 NE-10); UMass-Lowell dropped to 13-3 and 8-1. Jessica Otis, assisted by Candace Waldie of North Andover, and April Daugherty netted Merrimack goals. RachelMcCarthy of Reading scored for UMass.
