Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports reports that Curt Young has returned to Oakand. Young was the pitching coach in Oakland for seven years before taking a two-year deal with the Red Sox.
"Obviously it was a fun year in Boston, but not finishing the way we wanted to finish, I think has a lot to do with me being let go," Young told reporters in Oakland.
His one year was not a successful one. Sox pitchers were ninth in the American League in ERA and their September woes were the main reason for the team's collapse.
The amiable, low-key Young had a far different approach than John Farrell and that approach did not fit well with the staff.
The departure of Young leaves Dave Magadan, Tim Bogar, DeMarlo Hale and Gary Tuck as the only coaches technically remaining with the organization. All have been told they are free to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The Red Sox could retain one or two of the coaches in 2012 depending on the new manager.

As for the Theo Epstein talks, there is nothing to report at the moment. Various reports out of Chicago that the deal would get done today appear premature. As was reported last night, it appears commissioner Bud Selig is prepared to intervene.
