ROAD TO PERDITION **½ (Max on Comcast) Sam Mendes’s second movie is more ambitious than “American Beauty,’’ but suffers from not being about much of anything beyond its own comeliness. Tom Hanks plays a Depression-era gangster, Jude Law the hit man gunning for him. The first hour couldn’t be drearier, but the final sequence has an almost supernatural suspense. (R; runs through Oct. 20)
WESLEY MORRIS
LES MISERABLES *** (Max on Comcast) Solid remake of the Victor Hugo perennial, delivered with handsome size and amplitude by Bille August, who smoothly blends an international cast headed by Liam Neeson as the fugitive convict Jean Valjean, trying to be a good man, and Geoffrey Rush as Javert, the obsessive, self-loathing police bulldog on his trail. (PG-13; runs through Oct. 20)
