Braintree’s Archbishop Williams High School has named Gordon McClay as the new Assistant Athletic Director, Archbishop officials announced late last week.

McClay, a Plymouth resident, has been on the coaching staff at the school since 2007 as the Head Coach of Girls Varsity Lacrosse and Girls Varsity Soccer.

He has also lead the Southeastern Coastal Bay State Girls’ Lacrosse team since 2009, leading the team to a Bronze, Silver, and most recently Gold medal in the summer games.

However, McClay’s coaching abilities not only stem from his time at Archbishop. He has also been involved in the Plymouth Youth Hockey Association, and over the past 11 years has served as president, board member, and hockey coach.

He initially came to Archbishop after serving as Assistant Coach for the North Plymouth High School Varsity and JV Hockey teams. Prior to that, he served in the United States Coast Guard for 28 years.

Despite the wide array of coaching he has done for the school and elsewhere, his contributions lie even beyond that.

McClay is the founder of the Archbishop Williams Captains Council, a nationwide program that he tailored to AWHS for student athletes.

According to a release, McClay is the one to bring the curriculum to Archbishop, enabling the five-week program to be available for captains of all teams.

Over 30 student athletes have been through the program thus far.
