The inn’s lineage traces to the 1800s. It was noted for its Taste of the Mountains Cooking School in the 1980s before being purchased at auction by a local realty owner. Flat-screen TVs, iPads, and shared computers foster staying in touch, but the welcoming spa tubs, oversize shower heads, fireplaces, and tasteful furnishings inspire unplugged relaxation. Sip wine in the warm Black Bear Pub in the evening and breakfast on fresh-baked cranberry scones, almond-sprinkled baked French toast, and homemade granola with fruit.
DINE Fine dining with a neighborhood flair marks the comfortable White Mountain Cider Co. (207 US Route 302, www.whitemountaincider.com, 603-383-9061, entrees $18-$28, pub $10-$13) located in a farmhouse with adjacent country store and seasonal cider press. The contemporary American menu with New England accents reflects chef-owner Teresa Stearns’s imagination with roasted duck breast served with polenta and a crab cakes starter over apple-fennel salad. Or try the bar for a burger augmented with spinach, tomato chutney, and more, or the Moroccan grilled chicken sandwich with goat cheese.
