By 5:14 p.m. yesterday, only 242 National Grid customers were without power, mostly in the South Shore and South Coast.
NStar workers were going door to door to 300 of its customers, including some in Framingham, Walpole, and Acton, said spokeswoman Caroline Allen.
By 4 p.m. yesterday, only 50 NStar customers were still without electricity, she said.
“These are individual houses, which means they have to be serviced one by one,’’ she said early yesterday afternoon. “Each of these jobs has been assigned to a crew.’’
Accompanied by heavy wind and rain, the storm snapped trees like twigs and cut down electrical poles and power lines. More than 750,000 NStar and National Grid customers lost power, and families resorted to using candles, backyard grills, and flashlights to make it through the week.
“The main challenge has been the immense amount of damage’’ the storm caused, Allen said. “In many places we’ve had to rebuild the electrical system because the trees had taken down the poles and wires.’’
