■The Phillies’ second straight shutout of the Reds gave them 19 this season, most in the majors.

■Minnesota’s Jason Kubel’s has 14 career homers in 39 career games at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field.

■The Giants finished August at 11-18 with 78 runs - the lowest monthly runs total since they scored 77 in April 2009.

■The Braves said the Elias Sports Bureau reported Derek Lowe is only the third pitcher since 1900 to hit his first career homer at 38 or older. Randy Johnson was 40 when he hit his first homer in 2003. Preacher Roe was 38 when he hit his first homer in 1953.

■Bench coach Don Wakamatsu ran the Blue Jays in place of manager John Farrell, who missed a sixth straight game while recovering from pneumonia.

■Phillies lefthander Cliff Lee hasn’t lost since July 25 and has given up only six earned runs in his last six starts.

■Reds shortstop Paul Janish extended his career-worst slump to 0 for 26.

■The Athletics-Indians 16-inning marathon featured a Progressive Field-record 34 strikeouts - 19 by Oakland pitchers, who also combined for eight perfect innings from the seventh to 15th.
