Late August is replete with reminders of colder days ahead - a slightly chilling breeze, a solitary leaf that’s changing color, a thicker coating of dew on the lawn after dusk. For those whose minds automatically leap ahead to piles of snow and icy pavement, here’s an encouraging thought: There will be skating again this winter at Fenway Park, long after the Sox are gone.

The 2010 National Hockey League Winter Classic at Fenway was a magical event for Bruins fans and those of the local colleges that played on the outdoor rink. It was also a rare civic coming-together in the doldrums of January, as thousands of Bostonians lined up for a chance to skate on the Fenway ice.

Many opined at the time that hockey at Fenway should be an annual occurrence. Today, the city, the Red Sox, and New England universities are set to announce a plan to make it happen again this winter. On Saturday, January 7, archrivals New Hampshire and Maine will play in one match, while Vermont and Massachusetts will skate off in another. Hopefully, local high school teams and the general public will have a chance to use the rink as well. It’s a great way to extend the spirit of Boston’s summer temple of baseball into the winter months.
