Alex Gordon hit a three-run home run, Billy Butler added a solo shot and the Royals survived a harrowing ninth inning to beat the New York Yankees, 5-4, last night in Kansas City, Mo., and avoided a three-game sweep.

The Yankees loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and made it 5-4 on Robinson Cano’s sacrifice fly. After a passed ball, Joakim Soria reloaded the bases by walking Nick Swisher. Then Jorge Posada, on his 40th birthday, took a called third strike to end it. The wobbly Soria got his 22d save in 29 opportunities.

Bruce Chen (8-5) went six innings and beat the Yankees for just the second time in seven career decisions. The Royals have lost 10 of 13 games and the veteran lefthander owns all three wins.

Rangers 4, Angels 3 - Ian Kinsler hit a tiebreaking two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning and Texas rallied for its third straight victory over host Los Angeles, which has five straight.

Mitch Moreland homered and Josh Hamilton hit a run-scoring single for the Rangers, who took a commanding seven-game lead over the Angels in the AL West with their sixth consecutive win to open a 10-game road trip.

C.J. Wilson (12-5) yielded five hits over seven innings for the Rangers, who are a season-best 20 games over .500.

Twins 6, Tigers 5 - Justin Morneau’s bases-loaded single in the ninth inning lifted visiting Minnesota.

Joe Nathan allowed an RBI single to Miguel Cabrera in the bottom of the inning but still picked up his 11th save.

Giants 7, Braves 5 - Matt Cain snapped his three-game losing streak with five-hit ball over eight innings, and visiting San Francisco barely avoided another loss to Atlanta in the final at-bat.

The Giants broke it open with four runs in the fourth, one by Cain (10-9) on a sacrifice fly. Cain struck out nine and gave up only an unearned run in the first on Chipper Jones’s bases-loaded walk.

Brewers 3, Dodgers 1 - Zack Greinke won his fifth straight start and Jerry Hairston singled in two runs to help host Milwaukee defeat Los Angeles.

Mets 7, Padres 3 - David Wright hit a three-run homer and Angel Pagan had three RBIs as New York won its first series in San Diego in more than nine years.

Athletics 6, Orioles 5 - Kurt Suzuki hit two solo homers and right fielder David DeJesus cut down pinch runner Blake Davis at the plate to end the game, preserving Oakland’s victory over visiting Baltimore.

Astros 4, Cubs 3 - Matt Downs hit a go-ahead two-run single, Mark Melancon wriggled out of a jam in the ninth inning and host Houston beat Chicago to take the series between the worst teams in NL Central.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 2 - Allen Craig went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two home runs to lead visiting St. Louis over Pittsburgh.

Phillies 9, Diamondbacks 2 - Cliff Lee threw seven impressive innings, Wilson Valdez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh, and host Philadelphia snapped Arizona’s seven-game winning streak.

Reds 2, Nationals 1 - Johnny Cueto pitched into the ninth inning and Joey Votto homered to lead visiting Cincinnati over Washington.

Indians 4, White Sox 1 - Fausto Carmona allowed four hits over 8 ⅓ innings and visiting Cleveland topped Chicago.

Rockies 12, Marlins 5 - Aaron Cook pitched effectively into the eighth inning and Carlos Gonzalez’s three-run homer highlighted a powerful offensive display that sent host Colorado over Florida.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 1 - Brandon Morrow allowed three hits and one run over six innings and visiting Toronto connected for three home runs to crush Seattle.
