SHERLOCK HOLMES *** (HBO on Comcast) The latest big-screen version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective is a sly, noisy ride: “Pirates of the Caribbean’’ for smart people. Robert Downey Jr. brings his brain, his wits, and his gift for underplaying even as he understands he’s been hired by director Guy Ritchie to play Sherlock Holmes, action hero. With Jude Law (excellent) and Rachel McAdams (less so). (PG-13; runs through Sept. 6) TY BURR

S.W.A.T. ** (Max on Comcast) So what if you didn’t miss the 1970s TV cop show - here’s the bully-boy Hollywood remake anyway. It’s efficiently made, with swaggering performances by Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J, and Michelle Rodriguez; Olivier Martinez plays the latest in hate-the-French villainy. But the script pushes the talk-radio buttons with knuckleheaded glee, and the whole thing is infatuated with the porn of modern movie violence. (PG-13; runs through Sept. 1) TY BURR

ORIGINAL SIN ** (Comcast Movies: Free Movies) Neither original nor even terribly sinful, this transplanting of a Cornell Woolrich noir novel to Cuba captures some of the juicy flavor of a 1940s potboiler, although it’s too busy selling the sexual byplay between Angelina Jolie’s scheming mail-order bride and Antonio Banderas’s smitten planter to capture much of Woolrich’s patented clammy dread. (R; runs through Sept. 5)
