A state trooper already facing a variety of charges was arrested Thursday night in Raynham on a domestic assault charge, State Police said.

Derrick Costa, 40, was arrested in connection with an assault that occurred in his residence, State Police said. He was scheduled to be arraigned yesterday in Taunton District Court.

But Costa did not show up for his arraignment because, after being bailed from the Raynham police station overnight, he checked himself into Morton Hospital in Taunton, according to State Police spokesman David Procopio. While at the hospital, the court issued a default warrant because of the missed appearance, Procopio said.

Costa was taken into custody at the hospital and brought to the courthouse, according to State Police. He was arraigned yesterday afternoon and ordered held on $5,000 cash bail.

Costa was indicted in late July by a Bristol County grand jury on charges that included forgery, larceny, embezzlement, and possession of Class B drugs.

In late June, he was suspended without pay by State Police because he was a subject of a criminal investigation.

“The Massachusetts State Police condemn any and all acts of domestic abuse. The behavior as alleged in the criminal complaints is disgraceful and stands in stark contrast to the values, integrity, and ideals that the Massachusetts State Police demand and embrace,’’ State Police said in a statement.
