THE PIANIST **** (Starz on Comcast) The true story of Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Jewish classical pianist who survived World War II by hiding under the Nazis’ noses in Warsaw. There will be those who want more of a triumph of the spirit, but Roman Polanski knows better, and the director’s return to form is a brutal and profoundly moving tale of an artist bobbing on the currents of fate. (R; runs through Sept. 29) TY BURR

EAT PRAY LOVE *** (Starz on Comcast) There’s been some debate about what to call “Eat Pray Love.’’ Is it a romantic comedy? Is it a chick flick? In truth, it’s simply a Julia Roberts movie, often a lovely one. She plays an American divorcee trying to find herself through wanderlust. The movie is long, but Roberts works at the height of her powers, sometimes doing nothing more than sitting on a floor with a plate of food. With Billy Crudup, James Franco, and Javier Bardem as the men in her life. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 3)

WESLEY MORRIS

CASINO ***½ (Encore on Comcast) Martin Scorsese’s fierce look at the failed mob takeover of Las Vegas isn’t perfect, but it’s a rich and ambitious film. With Robert De Niro’s computer-chip-brained casino manager, Joe Pesci recycling his “GoodFellas’’ psychotic, and Sharon Stone giving a brave performance as the alluring but self-destructive hooker De Niro’s gambler falls for, the fireworks are nonstop. (R; runs through Sept. 24)
