August 01, 2011

The state’s Education Department is considering applications for seven new charter schools across Massachusetts.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education says it is considering proposal for five fully independent charter schools and two charter schools that would work cooperatively with the local school district.

The five fully independent schools are proposed for Somerville, Lowell, the Holyoke area, and two in Springfield. The other proposed schools would be in Boston and would need approval from the local school committee.

The department will determine which proposals show the most promise and ask for full applications by mid-September. The Board of Education will award new charters at its Feb. 28, 2012, meeting.

Last year the department received 42 proposals and awarded 16 new charters, the highest number granted in a single year.
