T-Mobile-AT&T merger is opposed

WASHINGTON - Senator Al Franken is urging regulators to reject AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA Inc., saying the deal would raise prices, cost thousands of jobs, and stifle innovation.

“This transaction is not in the public interest,’’ Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, wrote to the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department.

The merger would combine the second- and fourth-largest carriers to create a new market leader, ahead of number one Verizon Wireless. The FCC and Justice are conducting a review that may extend into 2012.

Franken is a member of the Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Justice Department. The chairman of the panel’s antitrust subcommittee said in a July 20 letter that the agencies should block the deal.

AT&T in documents filed Monday said the deal would lower prices and increase service in large markets.
