The Coast Guard is investigating the death of a 27-year-old man who was diving over a shipwreck yesterday 48 miles south of Nantucket. The man, whose name was not released, was exploring the wreck of the Andrea Doria, an ocean liner that sank in 1956, with other divers from the charter vessel John Jack about 8:30 a.m. when he was reported missing, said Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Hall, a spokesman for the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard boat out of Woods Hole as well as a jet and helicopter searched for the man, who reportedly had six hours of air remaining in his tanks, Hall said. Fellow divers on the excursion found his body seven hours later on the ocean floor near the wreck. The wreck lies in about 200 feet of water, a depth for only experienced divers, Hall said.
