ROUNDUP

Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam and Nick Swisher had a three-run drive in a nine-run third inning and the Yankees ambushed the Oakland Athletics early for a 17-7 victory in the searing heat last night in New York.

Swisher and Teixeira homered with two bases-loaded walks in between as the Yankees had their highest-scoring inning of the season. The big inning followed a five-run burst against Trevor Cahill (8-9) in the second and sent Oakland to its 11th straight loss against New York.

Derek Jeter drove in three runs and Swisher matched a career high with five RBIs for the Yankees. Backup catcher Francisco Cervelli reached base five times with three hits and two walks.

Jemile Weeks returned to Oakland’s lineup after missing a game with a sore right foot and had a two-run single among his three hits. Cliff Pennington hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs against a listless Phil Hughes. But seven Oakland pitchers allowed nine walks in a 3-hour-41-minute game.

Hector Noesi (2-0) pitched 3 ⅔ innings of four-hit ball.

Phillies 3, Padres 1 - Cole Hamels tossed eight dominant innings and host Philadelphia beat San Diego for the eighth straight time.

Hamels (12-5) allowed one run and three hits, striking out 10. Ryan Madson finished for his 16th save in 17 tries. It was Madson’s first save since coming off the disabled list last week.

Rangers 12, Blue Jays 2 - Nelson Cruz broke out of an extended slump with a career-high eight RBIs and Colby Lewis took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his 10th victory for host Texas.

Lewis (10-7) allowed one run and two hits over 6 ⅔ innings to become the third Rangers starter to win 10 games this season.

Angels 6, Orioles 1 - Ervin Santana took a one-hitter into the eighth inning, Vernon Wells hit a grand slam in the ninth, and visiting Los Angeles topped Baltimore.

Santana (5-8) allowed three hits and a walk in 7 ⅓ innings to earn his first road win in seven starts since April 29. It was the seventh straight start overall in which he allowed three earned runs or fewer.

Nationals 7, Dodgers 2 - John Lannan hit his first major league home run and Jerry Hairston Jr. broke the game open with a ninth-inning grand slam for visiting Washington.

Lannan (7-6) allowed two runs and three hits in 6 ⅓ innings to win for the fifth time in his last six decisions.

Braves 6, Reds 4 - Dan Uggla’s first career pinch-hit home run pushed visiting Atlanta over Cincinnati.

Uggla, who missed the last two starts with a strained left calf, lofted a 3-and-2 pitch from Nick Masset (1-4) into the right-center-field seats for the go-ahead runs.

Cubs 4, Astros 2 - Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano hit fifth-inning homers to lift host Chicago over Houston.
