The Captains 8 p.m., Epix

Boldly, William Shatner made this documentary about … himself, and a few other special people. He interviews starship captains Picard (Patrick Stewart), Sisko (Avery Brooks), Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Archer (Scott Bakula), and the young version of Kirk (Chris Pine), to understand what it means to play a “Star Trek’’ captain.

Torchwood: Miracle Day 10 p.m., Starz

Speaking of captains, Captain Jack Harkness is among the more unusual sci-fi leads. Played by John Barrowman, he is charming, gentlemanly, and bisexual. He’s usually immortal, but this season, as all human beings on Earth stop dying, he stops undying. Go figure. He suffers physically now, including a hangover last week. (By the way, his sexual tryst with a bartender was cut from last week’s episode when it ran on BBC One in England.) I don’t know where this excellent sci-fi series is going. But I will love it if the plot flies straight to the heart of our health care system and Big Pharma.
