Yankees ace beats Jays for 7th straight victory

CC Sabathia won his seventh straight start to become the first 14-game winner in the majors, Brett Gardner had three hits, and the New York Yankees beat Toronto, 4-1, yesterday, ending the host Blue Jays’ five-game winning streak.

Derek Jeter got two hits and matched Al Kaline for 26th place on baseball’s career list. Jeter singled in the ninth for hit No. 3,007.

Gardner doubled in the second, hustled for a double and scored in the fourth, then stole second after reaching on a bunt single in the sixth.

The Yankees got back in the win column after losing their first two games following the All-Star break.

Sabathia (14-4) allowed one run and three hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out eight. The lefthander has struck out 59 and posted an ERA of 1.68 over his career-best seven-start winning streak. Sabathia has won 11 of 12 outings, his only defeat a June 9 home loss to the Red Sox.

Mariano Rivera pitched around a pair of singles for his 23d save in 27 chances. New York got some much-needed rest for its bullpen, which had worked 10 ⅓ innings of relief in the previous two games as Toronto outscored the Yankees, 23-8.

Sabathia’s career-long streak of 23 ⅔ scoreless innings came to an early end when Toronto scratched out a run in the first. The Yankees gave Sabathia a lead he would not relinquish with a two-run second against lefthander Ricky Romero (7-9).

Rangers 5, Mariners 1 - Ian Kinsler homered twice and C.J. Wilson (10-3) outdueled Felix Hernandez (8-8) as Texas toppled host Seattle for its 10th straight victory, the longest streak in the majors this season. The Mariners lost their eighth straight.

Mets 11, Phillies 2 - Scott Hairston, subbing for ailing All-Star Carlos Beltran, hit a long homer and drove in a career-best five runs as visiting New York hammered Cole Hamels to snap a three-game losing skid.

Marlins 13, Cubs 3 - Mike Stanton hit two homers, Javier Vazquez (6-8) struck out 10, and visiting Florida routed Chicago for its seventh win in eight games. Florida’s Hanley Ramirez had three doubles and three runs.

Angels 4-2; Athletics 4-3 - Jered Weaver (12-4) held Oakland hitless until the fifth inning and won his sixth straight decision, pitching Los Angeles past the host Athletics in the opener of the first scheduled doubleheader in the major leagues in eight years. In the nightcap, Scott Sizemore singled with two outs in the 10th inning to give the A’s a split.

Orioles 6, Indians 5 - Alfredo Simon (2-2) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Nick Markakis homered and scored three runs, and host Baltimore held off Cleveland to end a nine-game losing streak.
