Monster slips as US hiring declines

MASS. MOVERS

July 17, 2011

Shares of staffing agencies and online job board companies, including Monster Worldwide, slid after a government report showed there was barely any hiring last month. The government said US employers added just 18,000 net jobs in June, the smallest amount in nine months. The unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent. Temporary employment also fell. Businesses generally hire more temporary workers before taking on permanent ones. Fewer openings mean companies have less of a need to use websites such as Monster.com, which has its main offices in New York and Maynard, Mass. They also might not need services of staffing firms.
