By not pitching yesterday, the Angels’ Jered Weaver had an edge to be named the American League’s starting pitcher for tomorrow’s All-Star Game in Phoenix. Weaver got word from Rangers manager Ron Washington, skipper of the AL squad, and called the honor “very exciting.’’ NL manager Bruce Bochy of the Giants will announce his starting pitcher today. Because of Major League Baseball’s rule that prohibits starting pitchers who threw yesterday from participating in the All-Star Game, six players were declared ineligible: the Yankees’ CC Sabathia, the Rays’ James Shields, the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez, the Phillies’ Cole Hamels, and the Giants’ Matt Cain. Three other players, Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, Rays pitcher David Price, and Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco, withdrew because of injury, meaning 16 players who were named All-Stars won’t appear, including 12 of the 68 originally chosen. The replacements named yesterday were pitchers David Robertson (Yankees), Alexi Ogando (Rangers), Michael Pineda (Mariners), Ricky Romero (Blue Jays), Kevin Correia (Pirates), and Craig Kimbrel (Braves); Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero; and Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval.

A-Rod will have surgery, out 4-6 weeks
Yankees All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez is going to have surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee, and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Rodriguez will be operated on today in Miami and is expected back for the final month of the season … The White Sox placed catcher Ramon Castro on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right hand and index finger and recalled catcher Tyler Flowers from Triple A Charlotte.

Jones in trouble with authorities again
Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was arrested in Cincinnati on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct while intoxicated and resisting arrest, adding to the list of off-the-field troubles that have marred his career. Jones was jailed around 3 a.m. and released in the morning. Cincinnati media outlets reported documents filed in court accuse Jones of being disorderly and shouting profanities in a downtown bar and trying to pull away as officers arrested him. Jones denied the allegations and said he hadn’t been drinking while out with his wife to celebrate her birthday … Pete Duranko, a star defensive lineman on Notre Dame’s 1966 national championship team who went on to play eight years for the Denver Broncos, died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 67.
