“He’s a good kid,’’ Toscano said. “He’s never been in trouble before.’’
Conley’s spokesman, Jake Wark, confirmed that Sanders has no criminal record. However, the teenager is known to authorities, according to the arrest report in the case.
The report states that an officer spotted Sanders engaging in a drug transaction in a hallway at 18 Trotter Court in Roxbury just before 7:30 p.m. and that Sanders fled when the officer approached.
The officer chased him through Ramsay Park and onto Washington Street, where Sanders was struck by a motor vehicle but continued running, according to the report. The officer caught up with Sanders at Washington and Newcomb streets, where a “violent and physical struggle ensued,’’ resulting in the officer’s gun being “discharged,’’ the report states.
Wark referred questions to Boston police when asked if the gun went off by accident. A police spokesman said only that the shooting is under investigation.
Sanders was taken to Boston Medical Center for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to the report. Police said Thursday that he had been shot in the shoulder.
The report also states that during the incident, the officer saw Sanders swallow multiple bags of a white substance believed to be cocaine.
Sanders was ordered held on $300 cash bail and is due back in court for a pretrial hearing July 11, according to Conley’s office. Wark said Sanders was “cogent and alert’’ at arraignment.
Wark also noted that the address where the officer first spotted Sanders on Thursday was the site of a fatal shooting over drug turf on Feb. 11, 2009.
Garrett Jackson, 23, was convicted of that murder last month, Wark said.
