BC awards more than $55K in grants to 14 Allston-Brighton groups

The following is an announcement from Boston College:

Boston College President William P. Leahy, SJ, and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino presented the Brighton Allston Improvement Association (BAIA) and the Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation with a check for $25,000 for the Commonwealth Ave. Improvement Project at a ceremony in Brighton on Monday afternoon.

The $25,000 landscape/beautification grant is awarded biennially by the Allston/Brighton-Boston College Community Fund for a landscape/beautification project that has lasting impact in a visible location, has the support of the local community, and a dedicated maintenance plan.

The grant award ceremony was held at Minihane's Greenhouse in Brighton Center on June 6.

Also at the ceremony another 13 Allston-Brighton groups were presented with Spring 2011 Allston/Brighton-Boston College Community Fund grants, totaling nearly $33,000.

Grants of up to $3,000 each were presented to the following Allston-Brighton groups:

Abundant Grace Church of Boston
Addiction Treatment Center of New England
Allston Brighton Baby Diaper Pantry
Allston Civic Association
Boston Art Commission
Brighton-Allston Historical Society
Franciscan Hospital for Children
Fund for Boston Neighborhoods
Gifford Sheltering Home for Cats
Jackson Mann Community School and Council
ReadBoston
Union Square Farmers Market
West End House Camp

Among the initiatives benefiting from these grants are: an adapted bicycle camp for children with disabilities; technology upgrades; camp opportunities for local youth; diaper distributions to local families, and preservation and display materials for historical artifacts.

The Allston/Brighton-Boston College Community Fund Committee is comprised of community residents and representatives of Boston College and the City of Boston. The Community Fund supports projects and initiatives of organizations, associations and programs serving Boston's Allston-Brighton neighborhood. The committee gives special consideration to proposals benefiting youth, senior citizens and the needy in Allston/Brighton as well as the beautification of the community.
