RE “A symbolic moment for families of fallen veterans: Flags planted at state’s national cemetery after 4-year effort’’ (Metro, May 29): I have been involved with immigration law and issues much of my adult life, and find myself discouraged by the vitriol and negativity associated with immigration and uplifted at the witness to what is best among us Americans that immigrants so often provide. I was moved by the story of Carlos Arredondo — who became a citizen in 2006 — grieving the loss of his son and proudly taking part in the planting of flags as an American father. This is another in the never-ending story of how so often it is the newest among us who remind us of how immigration is part of our roots and how all of our hopes, dreams, and sorrows are linked.
