Traffic on the highway between Stoneham and Somerville will be rerouted tonight, kicking off a traffic plan that will be used on weekends this summer while 14 bridges on Interstate 93 north of Boston are replaced, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.

The rerouting will begin tonight at 8 p.m., through Monday, June 6, at 5 a.m. The first bridge to be replaced is on I-93 north over Riverside Avenue.

The northbound side of I-93 between Stoneham and Somerville will be completely closed off. Instead, two lanes of northbound traffic will be switched over to the southbound side of the highway, which will also carry two lanes traveling south.

Northbound and southbound traffic will be separated by a movable “zipper line barrier.”
