Fabiola Guerrero says she was at work when a tornado hit West Springfield, flattening her family’s triple decker and killing her mother.

Guerrero wept Thursday as she returned to the wreckage. She said her 15-year-old sister was asleep when the tornado approached Wednesday afternoon. Their 39-year-old mother, Angelica, ran to awaken the younger girl and get her into the bathtub, saving her life by sheltering her with her own body.

Fabiola said her sister was trapped two hours, crying for their father, who also was injured. She says her sister `was saying, `Daddy, help me. ` Mom isn’t talking.’ ’’ Police found the father trying to free the girl.

Fabiola said her mother “was an amazing woman,’’ who worked at a Wendy’s restaurant and wanted a better life for her daughters.
