Freddy Garcia pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter provided the offense, and the Yankees’ bullpen made it stand up in a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night in New York.

Brett Gardner tripled and scored twice as the Yankees won for the eighth time in 10 games at home against the Royals.

Garcia (2-2) gave up six hits and a pair of walks in six-plus innings to win for only the second time in nine decisions against the Royals. He outpitched Kyle Davies (1-5), who allowed three runs in five-plus innings for Kansas City.

Former Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera provided the Royals with their only run, a solo homer to center field in the fourth inning.

Jeter had two more hits after his four-hit, two-homer game Sunday at Texas. He drove in the Yankees’ first run with a crisp single in the third inning.

A-Rod, who had been 5 for 27 with runners in scoring position, added a two-run single in the fifth. The hit followed a 9-for-55 slump for the Yankees’ cleanup hitter.

Indians 5, Rays 4 — Michael Brantley drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the ninth inning off Tampa closer Kyle Farnsworth to force in the winning run and give Cleveland its 14th straight win at home.

Brantley and Grady Sizemore homered for the Indians, who are 14-2 at home for the first time since becoming an AL charter member in 1901.

Marlins 2, Phillies 1 — Josh Johnson walked and scored host Florida’s first run, and the Marlins squeezed out another in the eighth inning to beat Roy Halladay and Philadelphia.

Johnson didn’t get the win, but he kept his team in the game against the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, pitching seven innings and allowing only one run — on Ryan Howard’s eighth homer leading off the second.

Rangers 7, Athletics 2 — Colby Lewis pitched neatly into the eighth inning and host Texas got a two-run homer from slumping Adrian Beltre in a victory over Oakland.

Angels 6, White Sox 2 — Alberto Callaspo drove in three runs and Maicer Izturis homered for host Los Angeles in its victory over Chicago.

Orioles 7, Mariners 6 — Matt Wieters singled home the winning run with two outs in the 13th inning, capping an improbable comeback that gave host Baltimore the victory over Seattle.

Tigers 10, Twins 2 — Victor Martinez had three hits and four RBIs to push Detroit past Francisco Liriano and Minnesota in a rain-delayed victory in Minneapolis.

Dodgers 10, Pirates 3 — Matt Kemp hit a three-run homer and Los Angeles broke out of a hitting slump in a win in Pittsburgh.

Nationals 7, Braves 6 — Jason Marquis earned his 100th career win, backed by three-run homers from Laynce Nix and Jayson Werth, and visiting Washington held off error-plagued Atlanta.

Mets 4, Rockies 3 — Mike Pelfrey hit a tiebreaking two-run double and limited host Colorado to three solo homers, helping New York to victory.

Brewers 8, Padres 6 — Jonathan Lucroy tied career highs with three hits and three RBIs and Shaun Marcum won his fourth straight, lifting host Milwaukee over San Diego.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 4 — Daniel Descalso hit a two-out, bases-loaded single in the eighth off Kerry Wood and Albert Pujols had four hits, helping Chris Carpenter get his first win of the season as St. Louis won in Chicago.

Giants 1, Diamondbacks 0 — Cody Ross hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth inning, Tim Lincecum pitched another gem, and host San Francisco beat Arizona for its fourth straight victory.

Reds 7, Astros 3 — Homer Bailey allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings, Jay Bruce had a two-run homer, and Joey Votto drove in three runs as Cincinnati won in Houston.
