Captain Chris Drury scored his first goal of the season in a surprise return to the lineup and Ryan McDonagh netted the first of his NHL career during a three-goal second period as the Rangers rallied for a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils in New York yesterday and then earned a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Rangers earned the win in their regular-season finale in front of an excited and nervous crowd at Madison Square Garden. New York then had to wait several hours to see if it would claim the No. 8 seed. The Rangers did when Carolina lost to the Lightning.

New York edged Carolina by 2 points and will face the top-seeded Capitals in the first round of the postseason. The Hurricanes would have gotten into the playoffs based on a tiebreaker had they beaten the Lightning.

With the season on the line, Drury returned to the lineup for the first time in two months and scored on his first shift. Drury, who had knee surgery and missed 27 games, scored 3:14 in to lift the Rangers into a 1-1 tie.

Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves for the Rangers.

Lightning 6, Hurricanes 2 — Vincent Lecavalier had a goal and an assist, and quick-starting Tampa Bay won in Raleigh, N.C., to eliminate Carolina from playoff contention.

Lecavalier, Dominic Moore, and Steven Stamkos scored during a 6:32 flurry in the first period. Mike Smith made 42 saves for the Lightning, who matched a club record with their 46th victory and closed the regular season with wins in seven of eight.

Flyers 7, Islanders 4 — Scott Hartnell and Andrej Meszaros each scored two goals, and host Philadelphia clinched the Atlantic Division title and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with a victory over New York.

The Flyers won the division for the first time since 2003-04.

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 1 — Brian Gionta scored two goals and Carey Price made 27 saves to help visiting Montreal defeat Toronto.

Montreal finished with the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, setting up a first-round matchup with the rival Bruins. Ryan White and Tomas Plekanec also scored for the Canadiens.

Phil Kessel scored for Toronto. It was the 32d goal for Kessel, who finished the season on a 10-game point streak.

Sabres 5, Blue Jackets 4 — Paul Gaustad scored the winner late on a power play, and four other Buffalo players scored as the Sabres held on to beat host Columbus in the season finale for both teams.

With the game tied, 3-3, Drew Stafford and Gaustad, who also had an assist, scored on a five-minute major to former Buffalo captain Craig Rivet for high sticking Tyler Ennis.

Panthers 1, Capitals 0 — Bill Thomas scored with 6:05 left and Tomas Vokoun made 28 saves as host Florida closed the season by snapping a 10-game losing streak with a win over Washington.

Canucks 4, Flames 3 — Christian Ehrhoff scored at 2:31 of overtime and playoff-bound Vancouver wrapped up the best regular season in franchise history with a victory over host Calgary.

Sharks 3, Coyotes 1 — Joe Pavelski scored his 20th goal and Antti Niemi made 35 saves as host San Jose wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the West with a victory over Phoenix. Ian White and Logan Couture also scored for the Sharks.

Blues 2, Predators 0 — Jaroslav Halak shut out Nashville for the third time this season and T.J. Oshie scored in the second period for host St. Louis.

Ducks 3, Kings 1 — Saku Koivu had a goal and an assist, Dan Ellis made 43 saves, and host Anaheim rocketed to the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a victory over Los Angeles.
