Buffett forecasts housing recovery

OMAHA — Billionaire Warren Buffett wants Americans to be optimistic about the country’s future but wary about borrowing money and alert to the games companies play with profit numbers. Buffett said in his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders yesterday that he still believes America’s best days are ahead. He said a housing market recovery will probably begin within the next year.

Giffords, staff pay tribute to slain aide

TUCSON — US Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her staff remembered Gabe Zimmerman on the slain aide’s 31st birthday. A tribute to Zimmerman, director of community outreach for the lawmaker, was posted Friday on Giffords’s Facebook page. The posting includes a link to a video montage of Zimmerman’s life. He was one of six people killed Jan. 8 by a gunman in Tucson.

Officer dies after stun grenade blast

CHARLOTTE — A SWAT officer was securing a stun grenade known as a “flash-bang’’ at his home when it exploded, killing him, police said. Charlotte Police Chief Rodney Monroe said Fred Thornton, 50, had massive internal injuries after the grenade detonated Friday.
