BUFFALO, N.Y. — A New York woman who was paralyzed when a 600-pound weight machine fell on her has been awarded a $66 million jury verdict.

The award in 30-year-old Natalie Barnhard’s favor late Tuesday followed an eight-week product liability trial in state Supreme Court in Buffalo.

Medway, Mass., exercise equipment maker Cybex International Inc. is responsible for most of the award. Cybex managers call the verdict disappointing and say it isn’t supported by the facts or law. An appeal is likely.

Barnhard’s lawyer called the verdict fair and just.

Barnhard was paralyzed from the neck down in 2004 and is gradually regaining some use of her limbs.

The accident happened at Amherst Orthopedic Physical Therapy, where Barnhard was a physical therapy assistant.
