Delaware denied in OT

Aaron Ball scored on a 1-yard run and Martel Moody forced and recovered a fumble in overtime yesterday as visiting Villanova upset top-ranked Delaware, 28-21.

Ball carried four times as the Wildcats (7-4, 5-3 Colonial Athletic Association) stuck to the ground on their overtime possession. The Blue Hens (9-2, 6-2) completed three straight passes to reach the Villanova 3 on their OT possession. On second and 2, Moody forced and recovered a fumble by Andrew Pierce.

Pierce caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Pat Devlin with 18 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 21 and force overtime.

Villanova led, 14-0, after Angelo Babbaro returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Chris Whitney threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Doss.

UNH 38, Towson 19 — R.J. Toman completed all eight passes he threw, two for touchdowns, as the host Wildcats made their case for a seventh consecutive trip to the Championship Subdivision playoffs with a victory over the Tigers.

Toman was 8 of 8 for 95 yards, and connected with Kevon Mason and Mike Greene for TDs for New Hampshire (7-4, 5-3), which defeated Towson for the seventh straight time. The Wildcats await this morning’s announcement of the 20-team FCS playoff field.

Towson (1-10, 0-8) tied a school record for losses, despite controlling the ball for more than 34 minutes.

William & Mary 41, Richmond 3 — In Williamsburg, Va., Courtland Marriner ran for two TDs and Mike Callahan passed for two as the Tribe (8-3, 6-2) earned a playoff berth.

William & Mary finished with the same conference record as Delaware, but got the automatic berth because it defeated the Blue Hens, 17-16, Oct. 3.

James Madison 14, Maine 10 — Jonathon Williams and Taveion Cuffee led a goal-line stand on the final play as the Dukes (6-5, 3-5) held on to beat the Black Bears in Orono, Maine.

On second and goal from the 3, Maine (4-7, 3-5) tried to win the game on Warren Smith’s pass to Jeff Falvey in the right flat. But Williams and Cuffee stopped Falvey for no gain as time expired.

The Dukes took the lead for good, 14-7, on Dae’Quan Scott’s 43-yard run in the third quarter.
