Cranberry crop expected to grow 6%

The US Department of Agriculture expects cranberry production to grow by 6 percent this year, which would make the 2010 crop the second-largest on record.

The USDA’s annual cranberry forecast calls for 7.35 million barrels, up from about 6.9 million barrels a year ago.

Wisconsin, the nation’s largest cranberry producer, is forecast to produce 10 percent more, in part due to an early spring and warm, humid conditions.

In Massachusetts, the second-largest producer, the forecast is for 1.95 million barrels, a 7 percent increase from 2009. The USDA cautioned, however, that hot weather and lack of rain could reduce the yield.

Production is expected to drop by 10 percent in Oregon and 16 percent in Washington because of a cold, wet spring that delayed the crop.
