Hunter sure lockout looms

Insisting the NBA’s financial projections “don’t hold water,’’ players’ association executive director Billy Hunter said yesterday he’s seen nothing to change his belief that a lockout is possible.

Hunter disputes commissioner David Stern’s forecast of nearly $400 million in losses this season, countering that the league’s basketball-related revenues increased to their highest point ever in 2009-10.

The league’s collective bargaining agreement expires next summer, and the sides remain far apart on talks for a new one, creating fears of the first work stoppage since 1998-99.

King is Nets’ GM

Former Philaelphia 76ers president Billy King is the New Jersey Nets’ new general manager. King was hired to replace Rod Thorn as the team’s top executive, new owner Mikhail Prokhorov announced.

Thorn is stepping aside as president and general manager tomorrow. He has said he simply wants a change of scenery after a decade of running the team.

The Nets also introduced to the media their latest acquisitions, former Lakers guard Jordan Farmar, forward Travis Outlaw, guard Anthony Morrow, and center Johan Petro.

Sixers sign Turner

The 76ers have signed No. 2 overall draft pick Evan Turner, according to president Ed Stefanski. The 6-foot-7-inch Turner left Ohio State after his junior year and is considered one of the most NBA-ready players in the draft.

The 21-year-old Turner will be paid at least $3.8 million in the first year of his deal, $4.1 million in the second, and $4.4 million if the Sixers pick up his third-year option. He’s expected to start at shooting guard.

Suns make moves

The Phoenix Suns have acquired forward Hedo Turkoglu in a trade that sends guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Dwayne Jones to Toronto. The deal gives the Suns a third forward in their attempt to replace free agent Amare Stoudemire. Phoenix signed swingman Josh Childress in a sign-and-trade deal with Atlanta and picked up Hakim Warrick in a similar swap with Chicago.

Contract withdrawn

The agent for Luther Head said his client is healthy and the New Orleans Hornets have not offered a reasonable explanation for why they rescinded a two-year contract offer for the veteran guard.

Mark Bartelstein said that by failing Head on the physical, the Hornets have unfairly hurt his ability to sign with another club. The Hornets have not formally acknowledged there was a deal with Head.
