Game maker’s talks with R.I. advance

PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation is considering a deal to help retired Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s video game development company relocate from Massachusetts to Rhode Island.

The agency has set a meeting for Thursday to review the proposal, in which Rhode Island would guarantee a $75 million loan to Schilling’s company, 38 Studios LLC.

The agency’s executive director said he is not sure whether the board will decide that day on a deal, but that it has another meeting scheduled for July 26.

Schilling won World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks.

His company employs more than 180 people at headquarters in Maynard, Mass., and in Maryland, and Schilling anticipates eventually employing up to 500.

The company recently signed a deal to have its first game published by Electronic Arts Inc.
