Devers fills vacated state House seat

LAWRENCE — A former Lawrence city councilor has won the special election to fill the seat in the state House of Representatives previously held by William Lantigua.

Marcos Devers took more than 88 percent of the votes cast in Tuesday’s election to beat unenrolled challenger Rafael Gadea.

Devers, who had lost two previous challenges to Lantigua, had his former rival’s endorsement this time around.

Lantigua, currently mayor of Lawrence, stepped down in February after coming under fire for at first trying to hold both political positions.

Devers told The Eagle-Tribune that priorities include strengthening public safety, opening two of six firehouses shuttered last summer due to budget cuts, and job creation.

Devers will have to run for reelection in the fall.
